At the end of last year, Rex Ryan couldn’t say enough positive things about Darrelle Revis. Ryan went as far as saying that he’s the best defensive player in the league. Whether you believe it or not doesn’t really matter. What does is that Ryan made those claims about Revis, and now Revis is holding him to it.

Revis has decided to sit out training camp and try and get himself a new contract. If he is, in fact, the best defensive player in the league then he does deserve to get paid. And the important thing to remember here is that the coach of the team he plays for made these claims, so from the viewpoint of Revis the Jets should put their money where their mouth is.

I’m sure behind closed doors the Jets brass cringed every time Ryan opened his mouth and poured out as many superlatives as he knows when he was referring to Revis. If Ryan was aware of the impact of what he was saying he probably wouldn’t have said it, but he didn’t. He proceeded to give Revis all the leverage he needed to hold the Jets ransom. Really, can you blame Revis? If your employer told everyone who was willing to listen that you were the best employee would you not want to be paid like the best employee?

Things have slowly changed in the past few weeks in New York though. No longer is Ryan singing the praises of the best corner in the game. Now he’s starting to get frustrated. His demeanor has changed in his press conferences, and it’s clear he’s starting to realize the mistake he made. He’s gone as far as saying he wants to get the whole team and Revis to sit down and get a deal hammered out. Then he finally came to the realization that maybe the contract talks should just be between the team and Revis. What a novel idea.

The problem is that the damage has been done. The Jets are going to be forced to pay Revis what he wants, how could they not? What this really brings to light is how delicate of a business football really is. Coaches not only have to be able to manage a team, they also have to manage the media. They have to understand that what they say can be used against them. Having pompous loudmouths as coaches may be entertaining, but from a business standpoint it drives the owners and general managers nuts.

This move by Ryan may not only cost the Jets a huge contract right now, but it amy also put them in a hard position in the future to manage their roster and salary cap. They have players like Nick Mangold and David Harris, who they have to worry about resigning by next year. Then there’s Mark Sanchez, who is potentially the next big contract they’ll have to worry about. When you start adding this up the Jets have a small window of opportunity to take advantage of. Not only do they have to make the right moves now, they have to make sure the moves they do make now allow them to make the right moves years from now. This may wind up being a very hard lesson for the Jets and Rex Ryan to learn from.

Offensive tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson did something Darrelle Revis didn’t do, and it’s worked out for him. Ferguson was quietly seeking a new deal this offseason and didn’t make it front page news. The Jets have obliged him and signed him to a 6 year $60 million extension and $34.8 million guaranteed. He had one year left on his old rookie contract, plus an option year. Fergusons new contract now sits at $73.622 million.

Ferguson was definitely a priority for the Jets, he’s becoming a dominant left tackle and with franchise quarterback Mark Sanchez looking to stick around for a while this was a good move. Now Ferguson is locked in and Sanchez has his blind side protected for the next 6 years.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis could learn a thing or two from his teammate. Revis made it clear earlier this offseason he wants a new deal. Not only that, he wants to be the highest paid corner in the league. Rex Ryan hasn’t helped matters any, he’s constantly telling everyone that Revis is the best corner in the league and that he’s the most important part of their defense. This only gives Revis more leverage for the contract he’s seeking.

It will be interesting to see how Revis and teammates Nick Mangold and David Harris respond to this. All three have made it clear they’re looking for new contracts. The Jets have been busy spending so far this offseason bringing in high profile free agents. They may have to shell out some more dough to keep their star core group of players happy.

The votes are in and New York/New Jersey will be the host for Super Bowl 48. It came down to a fourth vote put out by all teams, and all one needed to win was a simple majority. New York got it, and will host the first ever outdoor, cold weather Super Bowl.

It was widely believed that New York/New Jersey would wind up hosting the event. There’s no bigger game than the Super Bowl and there’s no bigger city than New York, so it seems like a good fit.

There will be lots of criticism of the choice though. There are people out there who believe that having it in New York could wind up being a mistake. Everyone knows what the weather can be like in those parts in February and it could be a factor.

There’s the chance that getting to the stadium could be very difficult if a storm were to hit the area just in time for the big game. There’s also the argument for playing the game in as fair conditions as possible, as to avoid any possible advantages for one team over the other.

All of that was put aside though to get the game on the biggest stage it’s ever been on. One thing is for certain, it will be a spectacle.

The Jets are kind of like that kid in high school that desperately did everything he could to impress everyone all the time. New York was so busy signing big name free agents that Rex Ryan told the media they didn’t need anything in the draft and that they were just going to take the best players available. It’s pretty plain to see why some people expect the Jets to underachieve this year.

Their first pick was Kyle Wilson, cornerback out of Boise State. He’s one of the top rated corners in the draft and possesses all the skills you’d look for at the position. The Jets aren’t in need of a corner so he may not get a chance to display that talent. They added some depth to their offensive line drafting Mass. tackle Vlad Ducasse. He’s a bit of a project, but he’s got excellent feet and could see time at guard with the departure of Alan Faneca.

One key loss for the Jets this offseason was the departure of workhorse back Thomas Jones. The brought in USC running back Joe McKnight, who is far from a workhorse but could develop into a solid playmaker. The also drafted Kentucky fullback John Conner, who decided to put his mission of saving mankind from terminators on hold to pursue an NFL career. To say the Jets have put all their eggs in one basket this year would be fairly on point. They’ll be more pressure on them than there is on Rex Ryans belt, and could be a boom or bust type scenario.

Not that long ago Santonio Holmes was a hero in Pittsburgh. Holmes made a game winning touchdown catch during Super Bowl 43 and was named the games most valuable player. Now the guy that made one of the most memorable catches in Steelers history is history, in Pittsburgh anyways.

Yesterday Holmes was dealt to the New York Jets for what at first was thought to be a bag of footballs, but was later revealed to be the Jets 5th round draft choice. The move is a little surprising considering the Steelers lack of depth at the position. But Holmes off the field problems made this an easy decision by the Steelers.

Right now Holmes is being investigated by Orlando police following an incident at a night club. Santonio was doing his best Roethlisberger impersonation and threw a cocktail at a womans face, causing a laceration near her eye. He is also facing a four game suspension by the league from an unrelated instance of substance abuse.

It’s pretty obvious to see why the Steelers kicked him to the curb. He had a fairly disappointing season last year. Couple that with all the shit he seems to get himself into and it’s clear Pittsburgh is tired of his shenanigans.

So a bigger questions arises from all of this: What the heck is going on in Pittsburgh. You’ve got Roethlisberger doing everything he can to put himself in ridiculous positions to get sexual assault charges. Just a little over a year ago Jeff Reed was trying to beat up a paper towel dispenser, which seems tame compared to everything else but is still pretty goofy.

I ask myself the question “Would this be happening on Bill Cowhers watch?”. Mike Tomlin has had a lot of success in Pittsburgh so far. But all the stuff that’s been going on has happened during his tenure with the team. I fully expect the Steelers to come out and be a strong competitor this year. But something tells me that any little wavering off that will bring up a ton of questions.

As this game draws closer, the matchup between the Colts and the Jets becomes more intriguing. Obviously plenty of people are picking the Colts, figuring the Jets cinderella season is ready to strike midnight. A good chunk of those people probably want to see the Jets lose. Rex Ryan and company might have worn out their welcome, but it’s not gonna be easy to kick them out of the party.

The Jets play the kind of football that seems to give the Colts the most problems. They play physical on defense and force their will on the quarterback. And their offense plays ball control, not making very many mistakes which could keep Manning with his arms crossed shaking his head on the sidelines. This game won’t be as easy as some may think for the Colts.

The Jets seem to hang around like a bad cough. They keep games close and capitalize when the other team gets frustrated and makes a mistake. Both the Bengals and the Chargers had leads on the Jets, but they failed to put them away when given the opportunities.

The Colts will have their opportunities on Sunday. The key for them will be to take advantage when they arise. If the Colts can get up on the Jets by a couple of touchdowns they’ll win, the Jets won’t have any kind of chance if they have to start throwing and playing catch up. But if the Colts don’t make something of the opportunities and let the Jets hang around into the fourth quarter, their season may come to an abrupt end and people are going to have to stomach Rex Ryan for at least another two weeks.

Rex Ryan is a confident guy, I think that’s become quite obvious over the past few weeks. So confident in fact, that he says he would be “shocked” if the Jets lose to the Colts on Sunday.

“I’m confident,” boasted Ryan. “There is no question about it. We’re going into the game expecting to win. I’d be shocked if we don’t. Absolutely would be.”

While he might be shocked if they lose, pretty much anyone else who isn’t a Jets fan wouldn’t be. The Jets little run was initially sparked by a win over the Colts. A game in which the Colts pulled most of their starters resulting in the teams first loss of the year.

The Colts took a lot of flak for doing what they did in that game and you could say it’s served as motivation for them as well.

To be alive this late in the season means you’re a good football team. So I guess Ryans arrogance confidence is called for. But in the process he’s only managing to increase the pressure on his squad and enrage the Colts even more.

The Jets are built to beat the Colts, ball control offense and physical defense. You gotta wake up pretty early to get one over on Manning though. He’ll be prepared for this game.

So Ryan can talk all he wants, which you know he will. His team better be ready. The Jets have become a target of dislike by many, if they lose the amount of pilling on that will take place could cause Manhattan to sink.

The Chargers did what they do best yesterday against the Jets. They choked. It seems the same thing happens every year. The Chargers are looked at as the most dangerous team going into the playoffs and they never fail to fall short.

You can credit the Jets defense, they played a great game. Revis played exceptional and Sanchez played smart as Ryan continues to keep the training wheels on his rookie quarterback. But more credit should be given to the Chargers for losing as the Jets should get for winning.

San Diego had chance after chance to get the upper hand but the kept stubbing their dinks. Turnovers, stupid penalties, missed field goals. You name it, the Chargers screwed it up. This did not look like the team everyone saw during the regular season. Nope. It looked like the same old Chargers playoff team.

Both these teams are as arrogant as you can get. To mix up an old saying, if egos were battleships both these teams would have two ocean fleets. I suppose you have to be confident at this stage of the season, but it’s at a nauseating level with these two clubs.

The Jets were able to back up their swagger, but the Chargers weren’t. Never during the game did San Diego seem like they were really riding any momentum. Every time they got something going they shot themselves in the foot. As a matter of fact, it almost seemed like the Jets caught the Chargers by surprise. Maybe even the Chargers thought they would be able to wipe the floor with the Jets.

Now I know what you’re saying, no way would the Chargers go into a game with that kind of ignorance. No way! Not Philip Rivers, not LT, not Shaun Phillips. Impossible! There is no way the Chargers would fall victim to their own hype.

Peg it however you want, the Chargers weren’t prepared yesterday. Blame it on the coaches, blame it on the players, blame it on both. Good teams don’t beat themselves, but San Diego wasn’t a good team yesterday.

It’s safe to say there will be some major changes to the Chargers in the offseason. There is a chance Norv Turner could be gone, as well as LT, maybe even Shawne Merriman. Something has to change though. There is consistency with this team and it’s not the good kind of consistency. Maybe the biggest thing this team needs is an attitude adjustment. That might just be the best starting point for their offseason.

Three out of the four games played next week will be a rematch of games played this week, pretty crazy. Even crazier is that all three were ass-whoopings and if it weren’t for an interception in the fourth quarter that set up a gimme touchdown for Arizona, all three would have been shutouts.

Having said that I think it’s pretty clear that the three rematch games, and the Patriots-Ravens rematch from earlier in the year, will be great.

The most intriguing in my book is the Bengals-Jets rematch. The Bengals looked horrible last night and the Jets took major liberties with it. A lot of people will say that this will motivate the Jets. I say the Jets don’t need any motivation. This is a team that lacks no confidence, if you watched the game last night you’d see that.

The point in the game that strikes me, and may just motivate the Bengals, was when Rex Ryan decided to challenge the spot of the ball on a fourth down attempt by the Jets. It happened at the beginning of the fourth quarter with the Jets holding a 27-0 lead. The spot was poor and the call was reversed, giving the ball back to the Jets. They added one more touchdown and it was the last points scored in the game.

The game was clearly out of reach for the Bengals and the fact that Ryan challenged the call doesn’t surprise me, considering what type of coach Rex is. But this is where the Jets confidence starts moving into plain stupidity.

Running up the score with brash arrogance on a team that you have to play in their stadium the following week is about as poor strategy as you can have. I know the Bengals looked bad and I know Ochocinco is a little banged up right now but don’t count them out. The game plan for the Bengals looked pretty vanilla, while the Jets needing to win threw everything but the kitchen sink at them. The Jets were telling anybody who would listen before the game how they thought they would physically beat up on the Bengals.

A lot of people say the Jets could make a deep run into the palyoffs. I say the Jets are going to find out what happens when you kick a Bengal in the back.

Bart Scott has always talked a tough game, and he usually backs it up. But a lot of the time talking gets the other team just as excited. Scott made some comments yesterday that could be easily taken the wrong way. Unless the wrong way actually is the right way, so then you wouldn’t be taking them the wrong way.

The “mad backer” had this to say when asked if he wants to hurt Chad Henne this weekend when the Dolphins roll into the Meadowlands to take on the Jets, “I want to hit him and get him out of there. That’s for anybody who touches the football, period. It’s that type of game. Write it down however you want to write it down. You don’t have to do something dirty to get somebody out of there.”

Well Bart I wrote it down exactly how you said it pal. Now far be it from me to take a passionate guy that talks as much crap as he does lightly, and I’m sure the Dolphins won’t either. It always amazes me when these defensive guys come out and say marginal stuff like this. The other team has a defense too and I know if I was Joey Porter or Channing Crowder and the defense was gunning for my quarterback, I’d be steppin it up a little. And if I was Mark Sanchez I would be telling Bart Scott to shut his mouth.
