Last season Miami was third fiddle in the competitive AFC East. This year, the Dolphins football savvy owners Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are hoping the team can rise to the top again under their guidance. In need of some defensive line help they drafted tackle Jared Odrick from Penn State. He’s big and strong and can be moved anywhere along the line, although he’ll probably play on the edge where they can take advantage of his reach.

Sticking with the d-line they drafted Utah end Koa Misi. Another big, strong lineman, Misi could be a disruptive force for opposing teams quarterbacks. Offensive tackle John Jerry out of Mississippi brings good versatility to the Dolphins offensive line and will add some quality depth. Miami really stuck with defense this draft selecting two more linebackers. Iowas A.J. Edds and Ohio States Austin Spitler will both come in as development projects and will probably get some playing time on special teams. They added Maryland cornerback Nolan Carroll. He’s athletic and aggressive and should fit well into Miamis scheme. Safety was an area of concern so they drafted strong safety Reshad Jones out of Georgia. He’s an SEC kid who hits a ton and has a nose for the football.

Bringing in one more defensive lineman they drafted Middle Tennessee States Chris McCoy, who they’ll look to convert to linebacker. Miami was competitive last year and probably will be again this year. Whether or not they can knock the Jets and Patriots out of their way is the real question.

Denver has officially washed their hands of troubled wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Earlier this morning he was traded to the Miami Dolphins for two 2nd round draft picks. It’s looks like a fairly good deal for both sides.

Marshall is one of the leagues best receivers. He’s a mismatch for pretty much every defensive back. He has great size and speed, and he has excellent hands. So it’s surprising Denver would traded him with no other receiver that can replace his productivity.

But Marshall and Josh McDaniels have butted heads ever since the coach arrived in Denver. Both are immature, but since Pat Bowlen fired Mike Shanahan and replaced him with McDaniels it was pretty obvious who was going to get the boot.

With the Jets doing everything they can to have the best team on paper, the Dolphins felt in necessary to try to play catchup. This move definitely gives them more ammunition for their gimmick offense to compete for the AFC East title. It’s just a shame Marshall had to go to a team where he may catch more passes from a running back than a quarterback.

It looks like Joey Porters time as a Miami Dolphin may be up. On Tuesday Porter told the Dolphins radio station that he feels as though he’s not being used enough by Miami.

“I’m an every-down player,” Porter told WQAM. “I’m supposed to be out on the field when the game’s on the line. I was on the sideline in the fourth quarter cheering.”

Things seemed to start heading south in the marriage when Porter was benched earlier in the season when the Dolphins played Tampa Bay. The only reason given for the benching was a coaches decision. Porter feels it stems from an incident on the Friday night before the Bucs game, in which he apparently went out for dinner.

Whatever the reason is it really doesn’t matter. Porter doesn’t think the relationship can be salvaged and has asked to be released. It’s tough to say whether or not the Dolphins will release Porter. Cameron Wake is the guy that’s been taking Porters time on the field. Wake is a pass rush specialist transplanted in Miami last year after spending two years playing for the BC Lions of the CFL. In his two seasons with BC he recorded 39 sacks rushing from the edge.

If the Dolphins do decide to release him he probably won’t be a free agent for long. As much jawing as Porter does bring to the table he’s still an asset. He’s surely has a few years left in the tank and he brings a level of intensity to a defense that you just can’t put a value on.

Ronnie Brown has been ruled out of Thursday nights game against the Panthers because of some sort of foot injury. Ricky Williams will start in his place and take over running the wildcat formation.

Ricky seems to do a really good job when he’s running the offense out of the wildcat. But Ronnie Brown is really the guy that makes it work, he’s an excellent football player.

It’s going to be interesting to see if the Dolphins rely as much on the wildcat or if they feel confident enough in Chad Henne and his arm to focus more on passing the ball. Henne has done a pretty good job managing the offense when he’s had the chance, he really doesn’t seem to make a lot of mistakes back there.

One thing is for sure, everyone is going to see what Miami is made of on Thursday night. Not that Carolina is a better team but now that their key player is out on offense they’re going to have to find a way to win without him. If Miami kisses the baby on this one they may have to seriously think about how much longer they want to ride this wildcat fad out.

Bart Scott has always talked a tough game, and he usually backs it up. But a lot of the time talking gets the other team just as excited. Scott made some comments yesterday that could be easily taken the wrong way. Unless the wrong way actually is the right way, so then you wouldn’t be taking them the wrong way.

The “mad backer” had this to say when asked if he wants to hurt Chad Henne this weekend when the Dolphins roll into the Meadowlands to take on the Jets, “I want to hit him and get him out of there. That’s for anybody who touches the football, period. It’s that type of game. Write it down however you want to write it down. You don’t have to do something dirty to get somebody out of there.”

Well Bart I wrote it down exactly how you said it pal. Now far be it from me to take a passionate guy that talks as much crap as he does lightly, and I’m sure the Dolphins won’t either. It always amazes me when these defensive guys come out and say marginal stuff like this. The other team has a defense too and I know if I was Joey Porter or Channing Crowder and the defense was gunning for my quarterback, I’d be steppin it up a little. And if I was Mark Sanchez I would be telling Bart Scott to shut his mouth.
