Washington Redskins Draft Review

Expect this to be the last year of minimal draft participation by the Redskins. New coach Mike Shanahan won’t be throwing away draft picks like the Skins have done over the past few years. With newly acquired quarterback Donovan McNabb needing protection, Washington spent it’s first pick on athletic offensive tackle Trent Williams. The Oklahoma product is a physical phenom that has experience playing all over the line. Some have questioned his work ethic, however if he’s able to overcome that he’ll anchor the left side of the Skins line for years to come.

Perry Riley was the only defensive player taken by Washington. With the defense moving to a 3-4 scheme, the versitile linebacker out of LSU looks to be just what d-coordinator Jim Haslett is looking for. McNabb was given a few targets with the addition of tight end Dennis Morris out of Louisiana Tech, who may see time at full back, and UCLA receiver Terrence Austin. Shanahan wasn’t finished adding depth to the offensive line. Center Erik Cook out of New Mexico bolsters the interior part of the line. A real steal at pick 231, Selvish Capers could compete for a starting spot at right tackle immediately. The Redskins didn’t have much to work with this year but Shanahan used the picks wisely. This will be a different Redskins team this year.
