Tyler McConachieI am a freelance sports reporter who has covered the NFL since 2009. I've been a huge football fan for over 20 years and am extremely passionate about it. I figured since I love to talk about it with anyone who will listen I might as well start writing about it.

The Worst Team in the Leagues Punishment for Being the Worst
You gotta feel sorry for the worst team in the league every year. This year it’s the St. Louis Rams. After the year is over they have to wait 8 months before they can even start to try and prove to everyone they don’t suck. Not only that, they get stuck with the first overall pick in the draft. Teams want that pick about as much as they want to be the worst team in the league.
The league financially rewards the players that have, in a way, volleyed themselves into the top few positions of the draft. Now I’m not taking credit away from the players that are able to do this. The problem is that teams have been forced into having to pay these guys in the first couple of spots huge money, so it’s become more of a financial burden than it does a benefit to the team. Now, the worst team in the league holds a pick that has value to few if any at all.
These players have only proved their worth in college, and once that’s done they go through the whole pre draft process to try and bring up their stock. How do any of these kids deserve to be instantly put in the top earning bracket in the NFL? The NFLs current rules regarding rookie salaries has been manipulated by agents, who were merely looking at everything as business. Nothing wrong with treating business like business but it can get out of hand, and it clearly has.
The league and the players union are not seeing eye to eye these days, and because of that the threat of a work stoppage has been around for a while now. The rookie wage scale is something that will have to be renegotiated, as with a huge list of other things. Who knows when they’ll finally shake hands on everything. But the current rookie salary system has major flaws in it and hopefully both sides can agree to that.
