St. Louis Rams Draft Review

When you’re the worst team in the NFL there really are no bad draft picks. Having said that the Rams had themselves a decent draft. They used the first overall pick in the draft on Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford. There was really no question whether or not they would take him. He missed most of the 2009 season with a shoulder injury, but providing he’s fully recovered he should be the starter in St. Louis.

They added to their inept offensive line, picking Rodger Saffold. The Indiana tackle was one of the highest rated lineman in the draft and could have gone in the first, but slipped to the Rams with the first pick of the second round. South Florida cornerback Jerome Murphy should add some toughness to their secondary and may eventually turn into a starter. They also added Alabama DB Marquis Johnson, who will compete for time in the secondary as well as special teams. Receiver Mardy Gilyard should provide Bradford with a dynamic threat in the passing game as well as the kick return game. There should be some good competition at tight end with the addition of Michael Hoomanawanui and Fendi Onobun. Hoomanawanui provides a good blocking end while Onobun could turn into a nice red zone target who can get up after the ball.

The Rams were also able to add some depth to their front 7 on the last day. Defensive ends Hall Davis, Eugene Sims and George Selvie will all compete for roster spots as will linebacker Josh Hull. The Rams were able to add 11 rookies to their roster, which should only help the Rams. It should provide some good competition in camp for a team who obviously needs it.
