Houston Texans Draft Review
Houston finally made their way to respectability last year. Unfortunately for them, they may slide back down. Their draft wasn’t bad, but Tennessee and Indianapolis may keep them from being serious contenders in their division. Drafting a corner with their first pick wasn’t a bad idea, considering they face Manning twice a year. Kareem Jackson out of Alabama could prove to be a good one. Coming out of the defense at Alabama made Jackson attractive because of the almost pro style they play there. He has all the tools to be a really good corner at the next level.
Running back Ben Tate out of Auburn could prove to be a nice compliment to Steve Slaton. He’s a downhill runner that has good speed for his size. The defensive line needed some help so they brought in tackle Earl Mitchell from Arizona. He’s a little small for the position but he’s got a great motor and could prove to be an asset. They helped the middle of the defense a little more by getting Miami linebacker Darryl Sharpton. He’s another undersized guy but he’s a heavy hitter and could make his way into the lineup one day.
With the Owen Daniels situation in limbo, they added a little depth to the tight end position. They drafted Garrett Graham from Wisconsin and Dorin Dickerson out of Pitt. Neither guy could replace Daniels production, but both guys have quite a bit of upside. Northwestern cornerback Sherrick McManis was drafted as well and should add some depth to the position. Gary Kubiak runs a zone style blocking system and loves athletic offensive lineman. Guard Shelley Smith from Colorado State is athletic, but will have his work cut out for him to see playing time. The pick for the Texans to keep your eye on is Trindon Holliday out of LSU. He’s just a little guy at 5′5″ and 166 pounds. But if you get him into space watch out, if you watched any Tigers games last year you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. In order to compete in their division the Texans had to get better this offseason. We’ll find out if they did soon enough.
