It looks like Jack Del Rios days as head coach for the Jaguars may be coming to an end. There has been a lot of talk floating around that Del Rio will replace Pete Carroll as the head coach for the USC Trojans. The only problem, he’s still due $15 million in salary.
To say the Jaguars have been a disappointment over the pst two years would be an understatement. After losing to the Patriots in the 2007 AFC divisional game there was talk that the Jaguars were going to be one of the top teams in the league the following year. They signed David Garrard to a big multi year contract and things were looking pretty good.
Well that was two years ago and things aren’t looking so hot anymore. Since they lost to the Patriots they’ve followed it up with a 5-11 season and this past year they finished 7-9. Not exactly where people had predicted them to be.
So Del Rio is the guy people are looking at right now and for good reason. It’s not like the Jaguars are lacking talent. They’ve just plain underperformed and someone has to take the blame, as it goes in the world of the NFL.
People are saying Wayne Weaver, the Jags owner, isn’t quite a Del Rio fan anymore. He’s not happy with, among other things, the way Del Rio treats the players or his work ethic. Those are kinda important when you’re a head coach.
There’s also the rumor that the Jags will possibly be the team destined for L.A. and if that’s the case, the team may want to hire a more reputable head coach. It’s a good marketing move. There’s the saying always put your best foot forward, well Del Rio is that foot with a dirty sock and a hole on the big toe.
So this situation will get real interesting over the weeks to come. There could be some tell tale signs for the future of the franchise and not just Del Rio. When it’s all said and done the Jaguars and Del Rio may be on their way to Cali, just not on the same plane.
