Atlanta Falcons Draft Review

Last year the Falcons took a step backwards, which was to be expected with both a second year coach and quarterback. GM Thomas Dimitroff is building an excellent young team though and they should get back on track. A real area of need for the defense was linebacker, which they addressed by adding Sean Weatherspoon out of Missouri. He’s a playmaker that should start right away for the Falcons and have an impact.

They wanted to keep bolstering their front 7 and drafted Kentucky defensive tackle Corey Peters. He’s a big body who, with a little work, could be a staple in the middle for that defense. The offensive line saw a few additions. Guards Mike Johnson from Alabama and Joe Hawley from UNLV add some depth, with Hawley being versatile enough to play anywhere in the interior part of the line. The secondary wasn’t much of a concern, since they signed free agent corner Dunta Robinson. But they still drafted corner Dominique Franks from Oregon, who excels in zone coverage with his quickness. They also drafted Montana  safety Shann Schillinger.

An interesting pick was receiver Kerry Meier out of Kansas. The former quarterback has good hands and size, and obviously has a good understanding of the way an offense is run. The Falcons didn’t have a ton of needs, so they were able to add some good, quality depth to their roster.
