Buffalo Bills Draft Review

If you’re a Bills fan something tells me that other than the first pick, you were a little disappointed. Buffalo didn’t disappoint with their first pick, drafting running back C.J. Spiller out of Clemson. Easily the drafts best back, Spiller is a multi purpose weapon that runs and catches the ball extremely well. This addition gives Buffalo one of the most dangerous backfields in the NFL, with him, Marshawn Lynch and Freddie Jackson.

But this is where it stops looking pretty for Bills fans. The were able to fill a need in the middle of the defense, adding Central Florida tackle Torell Troup. But memories of John McCargo will have Bills fans worried about this one. They continued to bulk up their defensive line drafting Arkansas State end Alex Carrington. Carrington brings great size and will fit in their transition into a 3-4, looking like a solid 5 technique player. Two more ends that look to fit into the 30-4 scheme were also drafted. Arthur Moats from James Madison and Danny Batten from South Dakota State. Both are athletic and a little undersized and both will make the conversion to linebacker. They added a couple of big bodies to their offensive line. Offensive tackle Ed Wang out of Virginia Tech is a project but he’s a good athlete that has potential to move to the left side. Kyle Calloway out of Iowa is another big tackle that may move to the interior of the line.

Unfortunately for Bills fans Levi Brown is not Tim Tebow. The Troy quarterback looks like he’ll compete for a backup spot if he even makes the roster. It’s pretty obvious Chan Gailey is looking to build his team from the offensive and defensive lines out, which is never a bad thing. But after passing on Tim Tebow it may take Buffalo fans a while to warm up to the calculated rebuilding process Gailey has planned.

Shanahan chillin in Buffalo

Word on the street is that Mike Shanahan is in Buffalo right now talking to the Bills about the head coaching vacancy. Right now Perry Fewell is the interim head coach after Dick Jauron got the hook.

I really can’t picture Shanahan as the head coach of the Bills but he would be a good fit there. Buffalo is a young, talented team that could be a lot more competitive with a new coach.

I liked Jauron, and form what I’ve heard the players really liked him. But it just didn’t seem like he was going to find success in Buffalo.

Mike Shanahan may just be the right fit in Buffalo, his style of football translates well there. The Bills would love to be competitive once again and battle for that top spot in the AFC East, something the Patriots have had a fairly good grip on recently.

Just an interesting side note: Bill Belichick is 3-5 versus Shanahan during his days in Denver. Don’t think the Bills aren’t aware of this.

Bills part ways with Jauron

Jason La Canfora is reporting on NFL.com that the Buffalo Bills have fired their head coach Dick Jauron. The Bills hired Jauron in January of 2006, replacing Mike Mularkey.

I’m not too surprised by this considering how badly Buffalo has underachieved over the past few years. I like Jauron but this is the best move for the team at this point.

It’s being reported that Fewell Perry, the teams defensive coordinator, will be named the interim head coach. At 3-6 the Bills season looks like it may be a write off, but stranger things have happened. Usually not that strange though.

Vick may land in Buffalo next year

Tony Dungy has been a huge mentor for Mike Vick. He’s helped guide Vick and acts as sort of a father figure for him. Last night before the Sunday night game on NBC Dungy spoke about how Vick had originally talked with the Bills before eventually signing with the Eagles.

Vick hasen’t really seen much action this year with Philly, really only seeing the field in some situations with the Eagles version of the wildcat. Looking at the Eagles right now I don’t see them bringing back Vick next year.

But looking at the Bills I can see how Mike Vick could fit in there. I do like Trent Edwards but I’m not so sure Buffalo is the right place for him. With Vick, the Bills offense could potentially be very explosive. Right now their offense is pretty offensive. This may even convince TO to stick around for another year….easy Bills fans.
